Councillor Anna Wright formally opened the new Hatice Hair salon at Highgate Newtown Community Partners’ Bertram Street community centre on Sunday 7 December 2025, during the centre’s successful Winter Fair. The event marked the launch of HNCP’s first resident community hairdresser, offering local people high-quality, affordable hair services in the heart of the neighbourhood. Councillor Anna Wright said: “Hatice Hair is something truly special – a hair salon operating out of our local community centre and offering genuinely affordable hair cuts and pampering for local people. Hatice is not only a very experienced hair stylist, she is also a community champion, supporting and caring for everyone by making them look their best.”
Hatice Günes, the salon’s founder, is a fully qualified hairdresser holding Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, both achieved with the highest distinction, and has won competitions in both years of her training. She previously worked in a high- profile city salon and brings advanced professional experience to this new community setting. Alongside her technical expertise, Hatice has a long track record of charity work, including support for food banks, elderly and housebound clients, and people experiencing homelessness, which underpins the salon’s strong social mission. Her aim is to welcome everyone, regardless of background, and to provide the same level of care and attention to every client.
Hatice uses professional products such as Redken and Wella while keeping prices as accessible as possible. Residents aged 65 and over benefit from half-price services, including a full wash, cut, and blow-dry. Cost should not be a barrier to looking and feeling good. The salon forms part of HNCP’s wider programme of community support and activities at the new Bertram Street centre, and local residents are encouraged to visit, meet Hatice, and book an appointment. Hatice said: “I want to offer a quality service to everyone including people who never get a chance to go to the hair dresser. With the cost of living meaning many people have no money to spare to spend on themselves, I know some people resort to cutting their own hair with their kitchen scissors. Instead they can come to my salon. I am proud to have all these people in my salon every day – men, women and children from all different backgrounds.”
Geoff Pyle, Trustee of HNCP said: “We are delighted to have Hatice providing great value hair dressing for all in the centre of the community here at Highgate Newtown Community Centre. “
